California Student Housing Bond Coalition
The statewide housing crisis impacts our public university and college students and communities. California students need housing now.
Let’s add student housing to the Affordable Housing Bond Act of 2026 so that it delivers housing solutions that benefit students, communities and California’s future.
About the bond
The bond funds, if passed by the voters, would support construction of affordable housing units across the state. However, as currently written, the bond bills do not include any funding for housing projects at UC or CSU.
Learn more about the bond
More student housing would:
- Help more students learn without threat of housing instability.
- Reduce housing competition for working families in public university and college communities.
- Enable the bond goes farther with more housing built per dollar allocated.
Include student housing in the bond
Student housing is a core part of California’s affordability challenge, especially in regions already burdened by housing scarcity. A $1B investment would:
- Allow UC and CSU to develop housing to be offered at rates 30% below market rates, ensuring affordability for our students.
- Relieve pressure on some of the most intense housing markets in California.
- Support thousands of good-paying construction jobs.
- Make it possible for more students—especially first-generation and low-income students – to live, learn, and thrive in California.
This funding wouldn’t dilute the bond’s mission. It would extend it—strategically and efficiently.
Advocate for student housing
Grassroots advocacy works – and we need you to help us make the case.
The Affordable Housing Bond of 2026 is moving through the California state legislature, and it’s a historic opportunity to invest in affordable housing for California’s college students.
But as currently drafted, the bond does not include public higher education.
This is where you come in.
Lawmakers are hearing from housing advocates, labor, local governments, and developers. Now they need to hear from you—students, alumni, faculty, staff, and supporters of public higher education—about why student housing must be part of the solution.
